Research and Training Coordination Workshop
The purposes of these workshops are two folds –to develop annual research and training plans and to train students and junior scholars on ecological and sociological methods and tools. Two different workshops are offered annually.
Research and Training Coordination Workshop
This week long workshop is organized annually at Michigan. This workshop is jointly led by Axinn, Liu, and all three junior investigators (An, Pearce, and Yabiku). Pre-doctoral and undergraduate students participate in the workshop as well as one collaborator from each international collaborating institution. About 15-20 students and scholars from all five universities and collaborating institutions participate in this workshop each year. The annual workshop is the hub of our management effort, allowing us to coordinate the research activities ongoing at each university as well as at field sites in Nepal and China.
Workshops draw upon the following topics:
*Updates on new data collection in Nepal
*Review of data currently available from Nepal
*Presentation of botanical data from Nepal
*Examples of completed analyses from Nepal
*Brainstorming high priority paper topics from Nepal
*Review of data currently available from China
*Examples of completed analyses from China
*Conceptualizing Agent based models
*Presentations of conceptualization and/or preliminary results from trainees
*Discussion of Neighborhood History Calendars
*Processes and procedures for trainee projects
*Data security/confidentiality and data sharing
*Discussion of Remote Sensing ground cover measures
Data Users’ Workshop
Each year preceding the annual coordination workshop, we also offer a data users’ workshop for pre-doctoral and early career scientists interested in using the Nepal or China data in their own research. We have conducted similar workshops at Michigan in the past and find this number of students interested on an annual basis. About 10-20 people participate in this workshop annually, including students from the universities in our program, the Summer Scholar, and students from other universities.
